How It All Began

Soumaya Laghiti, known as Stranger Souma, is a Moroccan sound artist, DJ, producer, and musician. Hailing from Casablanca, Morocco, her musical journey began with her exploring various instruments. Captivated by the possibilities of technology in music, she transitioned into a well-respected DJ and producer, known for her unique sound.

Stranger Souma's music is a captivating blend of House and Techno, distinguished by the incorporation of ethereal organic instruments and hypnotic ambient atmospheres. This sound pays homage to her North African roots, creating a deep, soulful, and spiritual listening experience.

Beyond captivating audiences with her music, Stranger Souma is a dedicated advocate for creating more opportunities and access to music learning, particularly for women and gender minorities. She has collaborated with a diverse range of Moroccan and international artists, fostering exploration of the connections between time, history, new technologies, and the complexities of identities in the modern world, enriched by Morocco's Amazigh, African, and Arab influences.

Her impressive career includes performances at renowned festivals and venues across France, Belgium, Morocco, Tunisia, and the United States. Her music has found a home on respected labels including Lump Records, Empire, Sirup Music, Kosa, Altorient, and Cafe De Anatolia, among others. In addition to her artistic pursuits, Stranger Souma co-founded Volubilian Records, a Moroccan record label that champions the region's unique musical heritage and fosters opportunities for female artists.

These transformative experiences provided invaluable opportunities for experimentation and exploration, fostering her interest in sound art and installation. Immersed in diverse creative environments, she delved deeper into the relationship between sound, space, and the human experience, pushing the boundaries of her artistic expression. Through these residencies, she developed innovative approaches to sound design and performance, incorporating elements of improvisation, sonification, and interactive technologies into her work.
